How do I save my Outlook password?

When using an RPC/HTTPS connection in Outlook, you will need to follow the instructions below to store your password so Outlook will not prompt you for credentials. You must be running Windows XP or Vista or Windows 7 (any edition except Windows Home).

  1. In Outlook 2003,  go to Tools > Email Accounts. Click Next to view or change existing email accounts. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Change.
In Outlook 2007, go to Tools > Account Settings and double-click Microsoft Exchange.
  2. Click More Settings > Connections tab > Exchange Proxy Settings.
  3. For Proxy Authentication Setting, select NLTM Authentication.
  4. Check Connect using SSL only.
  5. Outlook 2003: Check Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL.
Outlook 2007: Check Only connect to proxy servers that have this principle name in their certificate.
  6. The principle name for the proxy server is in the following format:
    • Exchange 2010 account:
msstd:exch021.serverdata.net or msstd:exch022.serverdata.net  (Proxy Server URL without east/west site specification)
  7. Click OK and close all the Outlook settings windows.
  8. Launch Outlook, and when prompted for your username and password, make sure to check the box Save Password and log in.
  9. In Windows, click Start > Run. Typecontrol keymgr.dll
  10. You’ll see the Credential Manager window with an entry with the Exchange Server name.
  11. Change Windows credentials:
    • Exchange 2010 account:
      • For Windows XP: Select the entry with the Exchange Server name and click Properties. Replace the entry in theServer field with *.exch021.domain.local or *.exch022.domain.local
      • For Windows Vista: You will need to add a new entry. Click the Add button.  In the Log on to field, type *.exch021.domain.local or *.exch022.domain.local. Enter your primary email address as the username and enter your mailbox password. Credential type should be set to Windows Logon Credential.
      • For Windows 7: You will need to add a new entry. Use the Add Windows Credentials link at the top of the list. In the Internet or Network Address field, type *.exch021.domain.local or *.exch022.domain.local. Enter your primary email address as the username and enter your mailbox password.
  12. Verify all settings and click OK.
  13. Reboot the computer.
  14. Your password should now be saved.

Note: You can verify your Exchange domain here: CONTROL PANEL > Get Started > Advanced Settings > Exchange Domain.

**Note: Only one account/password can be saved per Windows Profile**

If you are missing the Add button, you may want to modify Windows Registry so you can save the password. Note that to edit Windows Registry, administrator rights are required. This is because it is not safe and you will perform this operation at your own risk.

  1. In Windows, click Start > Run. In the command box, type regedit.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
  3. Find the DisableDomainCreds entry. A value of 1 (enabled) will prevent you from saving new credentials.
Change the value to 0 and reboot. You should now have the Add button available. Note that the value of 0 is the default value.
  4. Also check the LmCompatibilityLevel entry. It should be set to 3, which is the default value. If you have another value, change it to 3. If it does not work with 3, then also try it with 2.
  5. Reboot the computer to apply changes.

Also note that the new Outlook Profile Helper will allow you to save your password without making any of the above changes.
